9.2 A Fine Balance "Exodus"

Dramatisation of Rohinton Mistry's acclaimed novel about India's underclass.  Two tailors - uncle and nephew, Ishvar and Om - come to the city to escape from the caste violence in their native village. They are employed by a Parsi woman, Dina Dalal who runs a sweatshop from her apartment and is struggling to preserve her independence. She has a lodger too, a reluctant student, Maneck, from the mountains.  As their initial suspicion of each other turns to friendship and then love, their lives take dramatic and often shocking turns against a backdrop of India in crisis, during “the Emergency” of the mid-1970s, a period marked by huge political unrest and human rights violations.  A comedy, a tragedy, a story of the triumph of the human spirit under inhuman conditions.

Charles Dickens’ satire on the corrosive power of money set in the hot, hectic streets of modern-day Mumbai, India. 

Convinced his relatives are after his money, wealthy old recluse Martin Chuzzlewit (ROSHAN SETH), has adopted orphan girl, Mary (NIMRAT KAUR), to be his carer with the understanding that she will be housed and fed as long as he lives - but upon his death, she will inherit nothing. Thus, he believes, she will do her utmost to keep him in good health. But when his grandson Mickey (ZAFAR KARACHIWALA) falls in love with her and wishes to marry her, Martin’s plans are thrown into disarray. By disinheriting him, Martin triggers a complex web of deceit, betrayal and manipulation as the extended family and hangers-on close in, in pursuit of his fortune.

All deaths are not equal. There’s a caste system – even in murder....

The debut novel of Indian diplomat, Vikas Swarup’s was made into Oscar winning film SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE. It was also turned into a rather good radio serial “Q&amp;A”, first heard here on Radio 4. Now the team behind the Sony award-winning “Q&amp;A” has gone to work on Swarup’s second novel – SIX SUSPECTS. Inspired by a true story, it’s a murder mystery set in modern day India… presented by investigative journalist, Arun Advani.

He is following the story of Vicky Rai, a nasty trust fund baby who shoots a waitress for not serving him a drink. Across the ten episodes, Arun weaves a tale of the lives Vicky Rai has destroyed as he tries to solve the murder of a murderer.

She was asked to give up her possessions and her phone and begin the process of abandoning who she once was; to discover her identity within the community. She had her own agenda however and snuck off to make a call on a phone she’d hidden from them. In the last episode, Alia and Ratna tracked the killer down to the college. While they were interviewing suspects there another student, Meenakshi, turned up dead on the roof. Alia worked out that the killer must have thrown her off the roof and then dragged her back up to the top so she was looking at the flag of India. And beforehand Meenakshi had been stopped from coming forward to the police by her friend Faisal. Circling on the killer's motive and MO, Alia and Ratna turn their attention to Faisal.
