We remember all the good times and wish Joe well as he moves on, and recognize the synergy of it happening as Covid-19 restrictions end this weekend in Massachusetts. Our audience at 4:50AM really began to grow with the insomnia that this pandemic brought, so closing out this show as restrictions end just seems fitting. The Encore Casino is set to welcome full crowds back starting this weekend, but poker won’t be returning any time soon. And we say goodbye to a well-loved artist and author. We woke up to some good sports news after a late night for the Boston Bruins. The incentives being offered to individuals still hesitant to get the vaccine have been steadily increasing, and today free ice cream takes center stage… on this crew we’re hoping for soft-serve. However this easing of mask policy is entirely contingent on receiving your full vaccination regiment, and that leaves us a bit cautious about the honor system being implemented to enforce that. Good Friday morning, thanks for starting the end of your week with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Much to the chagrin of some of our Facebook Live fans, we start with sports today as the Patriots selected the guy they coveted, Alabama Quarterback Mac Jones in the first round of the NFL Draft last night. Governor Baker detailed some of the aches and pains he felt after receiving his second dose of the Phizer vaccine, something a few of our Morning Edition team members may experience in the next couple of days. After many predictions of a stock market crash if Joe Biden won the election, the reality is Biden’s first 100 days saw the largest period of growth for the indexes since Dwight D. Eisenhower held office. We’re expecting President Biden to issue new guidance concerning masks at some point today, and we wonder if Governor Baker will follow it up with some rules specific for Massachusetts. The Red Sox are now surprising more than just the fans in New England, right now they’re the hottest team in baseball… what a difference a year makes. Yesterday was a washout at Fenway… after promoting opening day for the Red Sox all morning, mother nature fooled us all. Right before the end of yesterday’s Morning Edition the game was called off. So they’ll try and get the unofficial start of summer going again down in the Back Bay this afternoon. There’s no rain in the today’s forecast and the sun should be out, but the wind and cooler temperatures will keep things frosty. Good morning, thanks for starting your Tuesday with Joe Mathieu, the Morning Edition team and GBH Radio. Well, we had high hopes that our social media streaming struggles would end this morning, alas, they continue on. Bear with us Facebook fans, we’ll get their new streaming system sorted out soon. Covid numbers across the country are spiking again, and the new director of the CDC is sounding the alarm for states to consider slowing down their rollback of a Covid restrictions. Amidst those fewer restrictions, the Celtics welcomed a limited number of fans back to the Boston Garden for the first time in over a year. And Joe would like to eliminate our use of the world ‘normal’ in newscasts and beyond. Thanks for waking up with us, and thanks for tuning in to GBH.

Good Monday morning and welcome back to the working world from Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. We’re still missing Karen, who will return later this week, and we’re missing our Facebook Live friends as well… hopefully they’ll return this week as well (thank you for bearing with us while we sort it out). It looks like the international traffic jam at the Suez Canal is about to end, as workers in Egypt are hoping to fully free the vessel once high tide hits later this morning. Locally the mass-vax site at Fenway Park is officially closed, as that operation moves over to the Hynes Convention Center. And Celtics fans get their first taste of live action in over a year, as a 12% maximum attendance will be at the Garden tonight. Thanks for waking up with Morning Edition and GBH Radio.

It’s almost the weekend - thanks for getting it started with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. COVID numbers are spiking here and in other states, and we try and understand why amidst an increasingly vaccinated population. Meanwhile our New Hampshire division reports on the Granite State opening up vaccine availability to all adults. The Boston Garden welcomed back fans last night at a greatly reduced 12% capacity. Despite an overtime loss, the Bruins players did indeed appreciate hearing from the fans in person. Plus today is a big one for celebrity birthdays. Thanks for tuning in to GBH this week, and thanks again to everyone who contributed to our Spring membership and pledge drive.

We’re still down one of our core members for another week, but our early morning conversations shall continue regardless. The nighttime/early morning weather finally feels like Spring, the Suez Canal is somehow blocked off, and the Boston Garden will be open starting today for a select number of “legacy” fans. Boston Mayor Kim Janney’s swearing in was a historic moment for the city yesterday, and local Covid numbers have plateaued at best, but really are not improving like they need to be. Stay safe and enjoy the warmth before it dips cooler this weekend, and thanks for tuning in to GBH Radio.

Good morning, we made it to the midway point of the week, thanks for starting it with Joe Mathieu and the GBH Morning Edition team. Marty Walsh is officially now 11th in line for the US Presidency. Walsh was sworn in as labor secretary by Vice-President Kamala Harris. Here in Boston, acting Mayor Kim Janney will be officially sworn in today. Some of us on this program are having vaccine-envy as we continue to see social media reports and news clips of people younger than us getting their shots. Consensus seems to be that most of the younger people receiving their shots reside in states other than Massachusetts. Thanks for waking up with GBH News and 89.7 GBH Radio.

We’re down a few people this morning, but we shall carry on and get this Tuesday started in our usual way. Sunset tonight will be at 7PM, the first time this year it crosses the 7 o’clock threshold - great for regular folks, not so great for nocturnal creatures like ourselves. After approval by the Senate, Mayor Walsh is on his way to DC to become labor secretary for the Biden administration. And a little trolling by Dodgers fans is taking place outside of Fenway Park. Thanks for waking up with us as always, and thanks for supporting GBH during our Spring Pledge Drive.
