Paris has launched a lottery to restore some of the spectacular funerary monuments within the overcrowded cemeteries of Père-Lachaise, Montparnasse and Montmartre. Gravestones and monuments in Parisian cemeteries are maintained by families, not the city, and some graves can become abandoned and decrepit over time.
